FOR A CLEANER WORLD

At the beginning of the semester some partners and I started working on a project for English class. This project was kind of different, because it was most that some homework to get a grade, the idea was to do something important, something that would make an impact in the world, and that way, make a difference. So, Mario Castro, Juan Acosta, Luisa Adachi and me, started looking for something, we started to analyze some problems in our city and ideas about what could we do, we think in a lot of possible problems, it was a little hard to decide, but then I found a new about a trash beach, that was something that impact me, I really couldn’t believe it, so I started to look more and found some articles about; first I thought that was impossible, but then I remembered all the times I was to the beach and I saw trash everywhere, and this concerned me, so I decided to propose my idea, and when we analyzed it and thought the big impact that all this garbage produce, how harmful is this for our beaches, oceans, environment, the world, we decided that we had found what we wanted to do, because it was necessary to raise awareness in people about how all the trash they leave in beaches affect the environment. Taking into account the importance of our beaches, because all the garbage people left at the beach, end up in sea and ocean, and the beach pollutions destroy animal and plant habitats and degrades the habitat of million of marine beings, we decided to do a beach cleaning campaign, in order to help to have cleaner beaches, but this wasn’t our only goal, with this beach cleaning campaign we were waiting raise awareness about the importance of having clean beaches and how all this trash can affect the environment, we expected to impact in tourist, people who live near the beach and everybody in general, and also we wanted to inspire our friends, since they were going to help us carry out our project, we expected that they understand the importance of do something to help our planet, and when they feel the satisfaction of making a difference and being part of the change, they would like to start doing other things to help the world, change bad habits for more environmentally friendly ones, and in that way, they could inspire more people, and if everybody start to do something little for our planet, eventually we would make a big difference, a big change. We had so many expectations in this project, we expected to teach other to be more aware, but we expected to learn some things too, such as learn deeply about recycling, learn to be more environmentally friendly, to learn more about our beaches, sea, ocean, to learn to be motivate to do things for our world, we wanted to learn to be better.

Once we analyze the idea of the beaches cleaning campaign, we started to do some research about the garbage that ends up in ocean and we found things more horrible than we thought, such as the way that this garbage destroys animals and plants habitat, kill marine beings, make animals suffer because garbage suffocates them or damages their stomachs, we was shock, so in that moment we really decided and committed ourselves to the project, because we really wanted to do something about that, in order to protect and help animals, their habitat, their life, our oceans, our world, even a little thing, but we were aware of the huge problem, the question now was, what are we going to do about it? we needed to do something, and the beach cleaning campaign was a good start. Our initial plan was to ask our friends for help, and some friends of our friends too, so we could carry out our plan and go to Punta Roca in Sabanilla, Puerto Colombia, and do a deep clean of the garbage beach in this place, which is in a critical situation due to pollution, according to the study conducted by Uniatlantico. Unfortunately we couldn’t do this, due the contingency we are going through, we didn’t have time to attend to this place and carry out our plan, this was something so unexpected, we really expected go to this place.

Even if the project didn’t go according to the plan, because we couldn’t go to the beach and do the cleaning campaign, we decided to share in our social networks a poster and some information about this problem, to raise awareness in people, which was one of our goals, so we couldn’t complete all our goals, but at least we tried to achieve one of them. This is something good, because even if this wasn’t what we really wanted to do, we could meet our principal goal; raise awareness in people, but we had to deviate our other goals. I wish we had spent more time carrying out the project and less time planning it, so the pandemic wouldn't have got in the way of your project, and we would have achieved our goals, all what we expected and wanted to do. Nonetheless, I learned so many important things in this project, such us the importance of our actions, how things that some things that people don’t pay attention them and sometime we think are just bad habits and lack of culture, are actually bigger than that, everything we do affect the world, our individual actions have a impact, and go beyond, so we have to raise awareness, we need to do a change, first we have to change ourselves, and then, we could to do a difference in the world, it’s necessary we make a change, because the world belongs to all us, the planet is our, and in the same way we enjoy it, we must take care it, it is out duty and we have to be responsible.

Now that we are aware and we understand the importance of our acts, how what we do affect the world, our world, and all the other species, which have the same right that us, it’s time to be part of the change, to do the difference, not just with this project, we have to start to do other things, change our bad habits and we need to start to be environmentally friendly. Now is our obligation to start to do other things in order to help the world. We learnt so much with this project, now is time to apply all we learnt and to continue doing things to help the world, and learning even more. A change have to be done.

What was the most enjoyable part of this project?

The most enjoyable part was preparing this entire project with the idea in mind that we would be helping the world, making an impact, albeit small, and hoping to create awareness in people and enjoy cleaner beaches.

What was the least enjoyable part of this project?

Reach an agreement with my group mates that would be convenient for everyone and that would not affect our other activities and occupations in general.

What do you wish you had spent more time on?

Carrying out the project, instead of just preparing it.

What do you wish you had done differently? Why?

I think the only thing that I would have liked to have done differently is to have carried out the project long before the date we choose, in this way we would not have had a problem due to the pandemic and we could have carried it out, which was really the goal.

My solution related to real-world and problems in a very important way, because it's not a secret that pollution due to garbage it's a problem which affects our environment and has a huge impact, especially in oceans, seas, beaches, rivers, etc., affecting all the sea life, including not just animals, but sea plants. The matter is very worrying and for this reason it's too much important do something about it. So, in order to help and contribuite, we have decided to do a beaches cleaning campaign, we expect reduce the amount of garbage that end up in ocean and it's killing our sea life, but obviusly this is not a real solution for a problem as big as this, so we expect have an impact in other people to raise awareness, and start to do things in order to help the world too. Also, we expect with this little actions, start something bigger with people who like us are interested in the world and want to do something.
My group and I have good communication, something important when you are in a team, and most important when you are trying to inspire others. So, like a team, we help and support each other, tryting to make things work. This is something that help us to meeting our goals too.
I think the project is working and is going according to plan, but maybe it is neccessary to do some modifications that make it better, like dedicate more time.
